The event is part of Zona &.
For ZONA &, Manuel Pelmuș presents a new work made in collaboration with performer and choreographer Anton Skaaning Thomsen, starting from the archive of installations and performances related to Pământul [The Earth] (1992) and Zona 1 (1993). Interested to explore the notion of the transmissibility of memory, to question the possibility of transnational and trans-cultural sharing of knowledge regarding events which took place thirty years ago, Pelmuș brings into the present, with acuity and empathy, a series of arguments about regionality, identity and corporeality. The performance set-up is made by artist Adrian Ganea, who builds for this occasion a podium made up of recycled materials (leftovers and other fragments or unused elements) which resulted from the production of exhibitions organised in the context of Timișoara Capital of Culture 2023.
Manuel Pelmuş born in Bucharest, is based in Oslo. He is an artist with a background in choreography and dance and is interested in the idea of a live presence within the context of exhibitions, exploring the human body’s relationship to memory and the construction of history. In 2012 he was awarded the Berlin Art Prize for performing arts, and in 2013 he represented Romania at the 55th Venice Biennale in a collaboration with Alexandra Pirici. His work has been presented at a number of international museums, including Tate Modern London, Centre Pompidou Paris, and the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven.
Anton Skaaning Thomsen is a dance artist based in Oslo, currently attending the Bachelor programme in Contemporary Dance at KHiO. In his praxis, he works with choreography as a tool to establish abstract spaces interacting with the audience through experimental physicalities. This year, he has performed in pieces as FUNKE at Gnist Festival, Broke Dance at Øyafestivalen (Oslo), and Permanent Collection – simultaneous ongoing action at the Munch Museum (Oslo).
Adrian Ganea, born 1989 in Târgu Mureș, Romania, works as an artist and set designer in Cluj, Romania. He studied at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) and the University of Arts Târgu Mureș. Ganea’s practice ranges from sculptures and 3D animations to extensive work in scenography for theatre and performance projects. He is particularly interested in forms of fiction that can materialize through the subjectivity of technologies.
