The Venice Biennale is one of the most prestigious international cultural events dedicated to artistic manifestations in the fields of visual arts, architecture, music, theater, dance, and cinema. Each organized edition offers an eclectic blend of artistic projects representing each participating country.
Romania's participation in the Venice Biennale illustrates a cultural dialogue with the world of international contemporary art, initiated over 100 years ago when its first participation in this event took place. Through its presence at the International Art Exhibition in Venice, Romania has gained a respected position on the international stage of contemporary art, with Romanian artists assimilating into a cultural network composed of art enthusiasts, curators, collectors, and other cultural operators.
Moreover, the recent participations in the International Architecture Exhibition in Venice have highlighted the creative potential of Romanian architects both in the European context and within Romania.
The selection of the winning project representing Romania at the Venice Biennale is made through a competition organized by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Romanian Cultural Institute in the case of the International Art Exhibition. In the case of the International Architecture Exhibition, the organizers also include the Romanian Architects' Union (Uniunea Arhitecților din România).
