Prefigure Urban Spaces. Practising other, transformed futures

In the course of the multi-day workshop, a futuring exercise, we will playfully imagine narratives of a transformed world in possible futures. Fragments of these narratives will be deepened during the workshop and transformed into „artefacts in a future”.

The Futuring Exercise will focus on currently missing as well as emerging future qualities in urban space and their possible uses and effects for residents of different generations, cultures and needs.

Before the workshop, we will give an insight into circulating ideas on futures literacy – the skill of collectively thinking about possible transformations. This will lead in to the playfully designed workshop part, in which we will devote ourselves to moderated processes based on adapted, condensed and extended methods of scenario development. This is an approach that we at Time’s Up consider central to the active co-creation of desirable futures.

From this point on, the participants’ practical utopian imagination takes centre stage. In an uncomplicated, light-footed and low-threshold way, we guide participants through exercises that support the training of our sense of possibility in order to think out loud about probable, plausible, (im)possible and preferred futures. Exercises that invite you to explore the future nature of possible worlds and their impact on individual everyday life.

Participants will come away with new ways of thinking out loud about possible futures, seeing the city in new lights.

About Time's Up
„…. it takes all the running you can do, just to stay in place.” – ´The Red Queen effect´

Time’s Up investigates the possibilities of haptic interactive human scale immersive environments. As a laboratory for the composition of experimental situations, we create narrative spaces, especially in the context of constructing experiential models of possible futures and building physical narratives that explore contemporary and emerging sociopolitical issues.

Our research is based upon constructing interactive situations, inviting an audience into them and encouraging their playful experience-driven exploration of the space and its behaviours, alone and in groups. In this research process we use tools from the arts and design, sociology, mathematics, cultural studies, science and technology.

Our goals are to collaboratively investigate the world and its options with a general public, communicating and discussing these discoveries through workshops, publications, teaching and symposia.
Time’s Up has worked from their basis in Linz, Austria, since 1996, has exhibited and collaborated with a grand number of inspiring partners throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and Australia.

The workshop is run by members of Time’s Up in Linz Austria.
