A human being chooses daily between doing good or bad, thinking about others or just himself, being passive or acting, being in a constant search for balance. A contemporary dance performance with physical theatre influences, Faust 3.0 represents one of the people dissatisfied with their condition, for whom worldly pleasures are not enough, and who in the search for absolute knowledge, forgot to live their life. Faust is merely Mephistopheles’ current mission, as every human being has moments of weakness when his dark side surfaces. The relationship between them is building gradually, Gretchen representing the disruptive element in the plans of Mephistopheles. Faust is passing through several emotions, from the will to commit the act of suicide, to sexual fulfilment, but finding balance seems and feels impossible.
Over the centuries, the legend of the researcher scientist who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for the elixir of youth has been reinterpreted many times in the dimension of theatre and literature, but less often in the one of dance. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust faces an enduring and gnarled choice: earthly happiness at the price of his soul. Part 1 represents the way in which Faust succumbs to the temptations of Mephistopheles and surrenders his soul to discover momentary pleasures and surpassing despair.
