We begin this year's edition on Friday 7 June at 6pm, with the opening of the photography exhibition Voyage en Roumanie by French artist Mathieu Pernot. The event is part of a joint trail with HEI - House of European Institutes. To facilitate access to the works on display, cultural mediation will be available during visiting hours: Wednesday - Friday 15:30-19:30, Saturday - Sunday 13:30-19:30. Admission will be free.
About the exhibition
The images in this exhibition were taken during a visit to Romania in 1998. During this trip, which is a unique episode in the author's work, Mathieu Pernot shared the daily life of Roma families in Timisoara and in the villages on the Hungarian border.
Kept confidential for a long time, this project has been exhibited for the first time almost 20 years after its creation. Taken with a Rolleiflex camera, these images now evoke another era of photographic practice, evoking the memory of fleeting encounters, the power of places and the strength of the faces of the people we meet.
About the artist
Mathieu Pernot was born in Frejus in 1970. He lives and works in Paris. After studying science, he enrolled at the Ecole nationale superieure de la photographie in Arles, which he graduated from in 1996.
His work is rooted in documentary photography, but deviates from its protocols to explore alternative forms and construct multi-voiced narratives. The artist works in series, each offering a viewpoint on the major political and social issues that shake society in its relationship to the margins and the periphery.
