With a length of 114 km and stretching between Timisoara and the Serbian town of Titel, the Bega Canal is a navigable waterway between Romania and Serbia, 44 km being on Romanian territory and the remaining 70 km on Serbian territory.

The construction of the Bega Canal, under the tutelage of Count Claudius Mercy (1666-1734), was a significant achievement of that era. Before the canalisation, the Bega River fed the marshy areas in the west. These marshes were draining for strategic, economic and, not most minor health reasons.
