When we think about today's city and urban space, we cannot ignore their sound aspect and its harsh impact on us and on the quality of life, on perception, but also on the environment in which we live.
Carolina Claus and Elena Biserna are researchers, but also practitioners, working with different methods to explore interactions between individuals and spaces through sound. For them urbanism and sound are closely interconnected and one of the key questions of their concern is - How can we define the conditions for a participatory tuning of our sound environment?

Through research and participation in planning and design projects, Caroline Claus engages in the development of sound strategies to improve the quality of urban life while promoting social equity and ecological sustainability. Shifting between the disciplinary fields of sound studies, urban planning and conceptual design research as well as exploring autonomous research paths, she works on a diverse range of outcomes, including sonic cartography, participatory design studios, live recording, audio walks and synthesis.
She studied Sociology (Ugent) and Urbanism, Spatial Planning & Design (EhB & VUB ∣ Cum Laude) and holds a PhD in Architecture from KU Leuven. She has a long experience in supporting social organizations in the process of organizing community engagement and outreach in urban regeneration projects. She has contributed to the planning and design of transitory urban railway spaces.
Elena Biserna is an independent researcher and curator based in Marseille, France. She writes, talks, teaches, facilitates workshops or collective projects, curates and sometimes performs. Her interests are focused on listening and on “situated” art practices in relationship with urban dynamics, socio-cultural processes, the public and political sphere. Her writings have appeared in several international publications and journals. She has recently edited two books: Walking from Scores (Dijon: Les Presses du réel, 2022) and Going Out. Walking, Listening, Sound-Making (Brussels: umland, 2022).
She has taught at ESAAix-École Supérieure d'Art d'Aix-en-Provence, Aix-Marseille University, the Academy of fine art of Bologna and Paris 8 University.
