Intersecting Realities

”The context of what human society has to cope with is changing rapidly, for example, through transformation of social and work conditions triggered by digital transformation, and through transformation of environmental contexts triggered by biodiversity loss and climate crisis. These transformations affect the scopes of what individuals and society are used to dealing with - and how the human mind can process the information. We are confronted with global issues that have multiple local implications, or implications of changes triggered by human action that materialize over decades. At the same time, scientific insights are used to describe the reasons for changes, which confronts the public with timescales, but also cosmic and nano scales that are beyond everyday experience. Additionally, public discussions about re-connecting to non-human actors in natural environments as well as technology emerge.

How to grasp the knowledge at the basis of this transformation? And how to make their causes and effects accessible?

”Intersecting Realities” navigates the intersection of these seemingly disconnected realities and scales by inviting artists whose work takes an active role as social change catalyst, creates an open space for critical discussions related to our immediate context, and an experiential setup for people to make sense of our natural, social and technoscientific environment. The artists featured in this exhibition enter in collaborations to invite scientific, artificial, and vernacular knowledge in a dialogue with their artistic research. At the same time, their artworks aim at enriching the discourses they connect to and encourage the public to take part. By also allowing a glimpse into this process, Intersecting Realities is an invitation for the public to intersect their path with artistic and technoscientific research.

The artworks in the exhibition propose to discover new realities at the intersection of art with other fields of knowledge. By engaging with non-artistic domains in their artistic practice and by exploring the experiential character of the various artistic media they employ, the resulting artworks are driven equally by mind and senses, breaking free from any forms of confinement or crypticism. Moving beyond mere rational arguments, the exhibition traverses possible ways to decode the abstract aspects of the intersecting realities of our surroundings through “being-in-the-world” experiences.” fragments from the curatorial text by Dr. Claudia Schnugg & Andrei Tudose, the full text available on www.marginal.ro

The exhibition "Intersecting Realities" is part of the project "Post-Digital Intersections" and aims to develop interdisciplinary platforms for artistic production, mediating a dialogue between the international and national cultural community, students from Timisoara and Bucharest and local communities. Through an approach based on the interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and practice, the programme challenges the critical areas of contemporary art and life, with a focus on the societal and cultural implications of the intersection of art with science and technology.
